ABOUT

Cedar Tree Learning is a mixed-age learning community that supports the playful curiosity, creativity and open-hearted joy

that is CHILDHOOD.

Cedar Tree Learning is grounded in the following pillars:

Uninterrupted Time Cedar Tree Learning aims to provide children uninterrupted time in which to delve deeply into their play.

Nature Immersion  Children become familiar with the natural environment.  They come to deeply know the Earth and aware of seasonal changes. 100% of the time is spent outdoors in all weather.

Rhythm  We establish a strong, predictable rhythm for children to feel safe and comfortable to curiously explore, create, solve problems, challenge themselves and grow.

Imagination  Self directed play supports healthy imagination. Through storytelling, play, song, and verse, ingenuity is nurtured.

Reverence  Sensory walks, quiet moments, reflection and time to give thanks to our Earth are a part of every day.

Guides Worthy of Imitation  Children learn by seeing and doing.  Guides model respectful, purposeful work to support deep play, cooperation, participation, and creativity.

Community  Cedar Tree Learning provides children a safe place to be children together, learn from one another, support each other and grow together.  Children celebrate (and often lead) seasonal festivals with their families.

And all is done through JOY!

Cedar Tree Learning is an all outdoor, all-weather nature immersion for children. Gaining more GREEN time and less screen time, children learn more about themselves and advance their social and emotional reasoning. At CedarTree Learning, children are confronting new challenges or questions because of the multi-sensory experience of green space. Being outdoors immersed in the natural world, children can engage with their surroundings and make focused decisions.

"Knowing that you love the earth changes you, activates you to defend and protect and celebrate. But when you feel that the earth loves you in return, that feeling transforms the relationship from a one-way street to a sacred bond." Robin Wall Kimmerer

"Play is the highest form of research." Albert Einstein

DEZIRÉ CLARKE MEINDERSEE

Deziré is a mom of four young explorers who inspire her work daily.  She is a passionate educator, with a Master of Science in Education Leadership Policy: Sustainability in Education. She began her teaching in an Expeditionary Learning School where she inspired students through compelling topics, inquiry-based learning, authentic projects, and deep learning.  For almost 10 years, she was a classroom teacher for the highly gifted and talented at ACCESS Academy in the Portland Public School system. At ACCESS she gained valuable experience and understanding for the constant curiosity of children, many of her students were on the autistim spectrum. She is aware of the various sensory processing needs of children. Her own children led her to Reggio Emilia, and Waldorf Education, where she found true beauty and joy in learning that was developmentally appropriate for young children.  She believes all children thrive with TIME to play, time to imagine and challenge themselves.  She knows children need a strong, predictable rhythm and nurturing caregivers worthy of imitation.  She loves watching children explore, discover, create and grow in nature-based play.

Deziré loves spending time in nature with her family.  She enjoys dancing, yoga, and quiet hikes to herself.  She loves to learn new things about the natural world and seeks out new learning opportunities regularly.  She is excited for families beginning the journey of nature learning and loves to build a strong connected community of families.
